Ranking the WORST EPL kits of all time

Both Manchester United and Arsenal are battling it out this season on more fronts than one. There seems to be some mild competition goin on between the two sides as to who can release the worse kit! Just days after Arsenal Debuted the eye sore luminous yellow away kit, Man Utd threw their hat (or shirt) into the mix by displaying their grey/green with white stripe jersey for the season. Fan reaction has been less than positive so far, but who knows, maybe these will go down as cult classics in future. But it did get us thinking, what shirts have still yet to go full circle and cross over into ‘iconic’ territory? here we list our 5 worst EPL kits in history.

#5 Spurs 2009/2010 home kit

I hated it when it was released and to no surprise of my own I STILL hate it now. This  may not make everybody’s list but it was the first kit that came to mind when thinking of previous fashion monstrosities to grace the  Premier League. Quite frankly it looks like someone has urinated down the side of whoever is unfortunate enough to be wearing it. Its hard to go to wrong with a white kit, but this is better left as a ‘one off’.

#4 Man City 2021/2022 third kit

You almost have to applaud Puma for trying to mix things  up and go against the grain of what a football kit should look like. Almost. Unfortunately for City the shirt just comes across as different but not special, too closely resembling either a cheap knock off or a training shirt. A key missing detail is the club badge, if they had managed to find a good spot for it, then I think this shirt would be remembered much more fondly.

#3 Chelsea 2007/2008 away kit

This was a late change on the list. Originally the Chelsea away kit from the 96/97 season was third place on this  list, but the more I tried to pick it apart, the more it grew on me. I think a modern spin on that kit could see it fly off the shelves, similar to Arsenals bruised banana kit they brought back a couple of seasons ago. This one on the other hand, doesn’t work on any level. The highlighter yellow just doesn’t work in any context, as Arsenal are finding out this  season, and the faded yellow on the shorts and socks are even worse. Deserved to lose the Champions league final that year based on this kit alone.

#2 Aston Villa 1993/1995 away kit

What makes this worse is that they stuck with it for 2 years. Red, black and green is hardly a classic combo, while the design itself seemed outdated even for the time. Hard to write too much about this one, as the more I look at it, the more I am filled with genuine rage.

#1 Manchester United 1995/1996 away kit

The inspiration to the inspiration for this article. A famously bad kit that has the unique accolade of being swapped at half time by the United team because even the players hated it that much. I truly believe it is possible to make a classy grey footballing shirt but the red devils are 0/2 in their attempts. Clearly inspired by a  broken tv, the designer has tried to imitate the static feel you would have gotten when you lost signal. This is a direct plea to anyone, please find and send me pictures of grey kits that DO work!
